Breastfeeding when mum is ill
Many medicines are compatible with breastfeeding. If your medication is not compatible and you want to preserve your supply, you can pump and dump until the breast milk is safe to be fed to your baby.
Experts agree that if your baby is ill, you should do your best to continue breastfeeding. Breast milk contains antibodies that help your baby fight illnesses and infections. It is also easy to digest, while the act of breastfeeding is very reassuring for a baby in distress.
If your baby cannot latch on, you can try expressing and giving him breast milk from a cup or bottle.
