Deirdre Munro
Having breastfed herself Deirdre is very much aware of the challenges breastfeeding mothers are faced with from a physiological, psychological and indeed social perspective. During her personal journey and current professional experience Deirdre is forever amazed by the immeasurable value of women’s support of each other.
In 1990 Deirdre trained as a general nurse in Sligo and then travelled to Hull City to work in coronary care/medical elderly.
In 1995 Deirdre returned to Ireland during a quiet economic climate and worked in customer services graduating as a financial advisor in UCD 1998. Agency nursing allowed her to continue her nursing practice. From 2000-2004 Deirdre staffed as an orthopaedic nurse in Merlin Park Galway.
Deirdre applied for midwifery three times and finally started her training as a midwife in Galway 2004! She continues to study and graduated with a Masters in Health Services Research (hons) from the National University Ireland Galway and presented her research. She has written a couple of articles for the World of Irish Nursing and Nurse2nurse website.
Deirdre is extremely passionate about research and always trying to find opportunities to bridge the infamous knowledge to practice gap. This project is an exciting new chapter for Deirdre, she feels privileged to follow women’s breastfeeding journeys; to capture the many highs, identify the challenges and to capture this forceful empowerment of women for women. Hopefully this project will encourage more women to give breastfeeding a try and motivate the existing breastfeeding mothers to breastfeed for longer..........
