Before you start
You and your partner might want to read about breastfeeding before embarking on your journey. That’s why Mumslikeus offers a Breastfeeding Guide from the third trimester of pregnancy up to and beyond your baby's first birthday. It’s also good to talk – your healthcare professional and our experienced mums can encourage you along the way.
How breastfeeding works
It is possible that you could be breastfeeding for up to an hour as it might take 15-30 minutes for your baby to drain one breast. Try offering both breasts at each feed. Next time your baby feeds, offer the breast that didn’t get emptied on the previous feed first. Draining both breasts every day is important to avoid engorgement. When you have established breastfeeding, try and use nursing as an opportunity to relax as you might be busy in between feeds. As your baby grows, they will become more efficient at feeding and will nurse faster. To breastfeed with ease, sit in a comfortable chair and have cushions or pillows at hand to support your neck and back, and to bring the baby up to the right height. Have drinks and snacks at arm’s reach. Muslin squares or a towel might come in handy for winding or if your other breast starts leaking.
It may also be convenient to have your mobile phone nearby so you can catch up with family and friends, and perhaps a glossy magazine or the remote for the TV too!
