Storing breastmilk

Breast milk should be handled carefully to prevent contamination from bacteria. Always wash your hands prior to expressing and store milk in the fridge or freezer as soon as possible.

If you are storing breast milk in the fridge, use an airtight and sterile container with a lid; if you are freezing it, you can buy special thick bags that are designed for storing breast milk or use suitable plastic containers – these are sold in good chemists and baby stores. If you are freezing your milk for long periods, mark the container with your name and the date of expressing and check the model of your freezer as its temperature will affect the length of storage.

When storing breast milk in a fridge, place your container at the back and not in the door, well away from meat products, eggs and uncooked foods.

Breast milk storage guidelines

Every breastfeeding organisation has different guidelines for storing breast milk, the following recommendations have been compiled by the Health Service Executive. They are suitable for mums storing breast milk for healthy, full term babies. If your baby has been very ill or was born prematurely, please discuss these guidelines with a healthcare professional.
  • Freshly expressed breast milk placed in a closed container can be kept: at room temperature (no warmer than 26C or lower) for up to eight hours
  • in a fridge (4ºC or lower) for 3-5 days (stored at the back)
  • in freezer compartment inside a fridge: 3 months; in chest freezer: 6 months.
Once it has been warmed to room temperature, breast milk should be used or thrown away. Refreezing breast milk is not recommended. Breast milk should not be defrosted in a microwave because it heats unevenly and the milk may burn your baby’s mouth. If the breast milk has been defrosted in the fridge, it can be stored there for 24 hours.

Breastfeeding Benefits

Breastfeeding offers lifelong benefits for you and your baby. Health benefits include a lower risk of some cancers for you & less chance of allergies for your baby. Even if you cannot breastfeed for as long as you had planned, the good news is that you are still giving your baby a precious gift. For example, did you know that breastfeeding for even just six weeks can lower your baby’s risk of chest infections up to the age of seven?

An Aptaclub initiative to support & encourage breastfeeding in Ireland

Ireland has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in Europe, research has shown that one of the reasons cited by mothers for this is lack of support. That is why we created a website to support breastfeeding and help mums with their nursing for as long as they wish. For over 50 years we have been committed to learning from the natural benefits of breast milk with an ongoing programme of research that now involves over 250 scientists, paediatricians and nutritionists. Although our nutrition products include infant products, we have always stressed, both in our literature and advertising, that breast milk is the perfect food for babies. It is because of this we strongly believe that www.mumslikeus.ie, a comprehensive website to support other national breastfeeding initiatives means we can work together to provide the support to mothers during this challenging and exciting time in order to improve and sustain breastfeeding rates in Ireland the long term. This is in line with the Aptaclub mission to make a difference to the long term health of babies in Ireland..
