Stocking up for baby
In the last weeks of pregnancy, cook meals in big amounts and put the extra portions in the freezer, ready for when you bring your baby home.
Closer to the birth, stock your cupboard and fridge with foods and snacks that can be eaten easily and need little preparation, such as fruit, salad vegetables, pre-cut vegetables with dips, cheese and yoghurts. Bakery items like muffins, crumpets and toasting bread can be either refrigerated or frozen.
Cupboard staples include non perishable foods like tinned tuna, dried fruit, tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, tortilla wraps, olives and soy sauce for stir fries. You can rustle up a tasty pasta dish with tuna and olives or buy mince and have tortilla wraps filled with chilli con carne (go easy with the spices). Keep basic ingredients like flour and oil. Always have fresh eggs in the fridge, they can be cooked in so many ways and are easy to prepare.
Quick meals to make from scratch include pasta, stir fries and curries. If you are buying convenience food, look for quality meals and soups whenever possible. Freezable meals you can prepare in advance include: spaghetti bolognese, lasagne, chilli con carne, curries, shepherd’s pie and soups.
