Sore nipples and nipple pain
On-going discomfort and pain throughout and after feeds should not be ignored. Do not suffer in silence, seek help from a healthcare professional or breastfeeding counsellor.
Sore nipples are usually due to your baby being poorly latched on – your baby’s gums and tongue cause abrasion to the soft tissue of the nipple. Don’t be alarmed, this is such a common and easy problem to fix if you get support.
Only if left untreated, soreness can lead to cracked and/or bleeding nipples. Cracked nipples can lead to infections and you will need to see your doctor for treatment.
How to solve nipple problems
When you feed, you can:- seek advice on the latch and/or try another position
- hand-express in a cup to stimulate letdown of breast milk before putting the baby on the breast
- breastfeed your baby on the less sore breast first.
- seek advice on techniques, creams and painkillers you can safely take
- avoid plastic breast pads or bras made of man-made fabrics
- seek advice on nipple shields (as a last resort).
- expose your nipples to the air as much as possible. Avoid soggy breast pads and tight-fitting bras. Keep feeding or your breasts will become engorged. Some shields can be worn around this time as they have holes that let air reach your nipples while still keeping clothes from brushing off the sensitive areas and making your nipples sore
- offer your baby short, frequent feeds – you will be encouraging a less strong suck
- apply warm, moist compresses to your nipples – only if you don’t have thrush
- apply breast milk to your nipples – only if you don’t have thrush
- use a folk remedy such as leaves of Savoy cabbage in your bra – refrigerate the leaves if coldness helps.
