Louise and Tom, Dublin, Age 35
Louise is a 35 year old mother of two children. Lucy is 2 years old now and baby Tom is just 2 weeks old.
She breastfed Lucy for 5 months but with many difficulties and hopes this time around to feed for longer and with fewer challenges.
Louise read a few books on breastfeeding before she had Lucy and as a result decided that she would follow a routine of waking Lucy every few hours to feed as opposed to letting her feed on demand. She found this very tiring and did not establish any routine as she had hoped. Also Louise had a flat (slightly inverted) nipple on one side which she found difficult in the early weeks of feeding and as a result developed a cracked, bleeding and very painful nipple. This was a result of poor latching techniques. She developed mastitis and experienced a lot of discomfort. She continued on her journey and yet again developed mastitis further down the line and eventually stopped feeding when Lucy was 5 months old.
This time she is feeding Tom on demand and wants to avoid some of the pitfalls she encountered last time. Position and careful latching are very important from the outset, particularly on the breast with the flat nipple, to avoid any recurrence of previous problems. We will follow Louise each week to offer advice and support and to hear her story.
Louise 's Stages
Tom is gaining weight steadily and all is going well with breastfeeding. Louise noticed that Tom has thrush in his mouth and has started treatment for it. Tom has been waking up often at night and we discuss ways to alter his sleeping routine.
